SCOTUS: Thank-you For Re-Energizing The Tea Party

While I have been trying to keep this particular blog on “local” tea party related topics, I thought I would write about yesterday’s decision by the Supreme Court on Obamacare. Guess what? I personally think this is a great decision, especially for the tea party.
You see this is just what we in the tea party need to reenergize the movement, especially here in Massachusetts where we seem to have split ourselves apart over various issues. Many in the movement have lost their focus and this should help to bring it back.

A few posts ago, in writing about the Sturbridge annual town meeting, I mentioned there are many people here in town (as I am sure there are in many other towns as well) who at heart are tea party believers, they are just afraid to show it. The tea party movement has been coopted in many cases by people with very divergent agendas. While these are all legitimate concerns, this is not what the original tea party movement was about.

Look at the core principles of the movement:
  • Fiscal Responsibility
  • Smaller Government
  • Strict Constitutionalism
  • Individual Responsibility
Obamacare is certainly the “poster child” which goes against at least three of these four points. We’ll leave the constitutionality of it alone since we do have a Supreme Court decision saying it is Constitutional. There is enough grist for the tea party mill in Obamacare for the other three to keep us all focused.

Another point to make as to why this is good for the tea party movement, taxes, which will now be used as the reason for more and more control over our daily lives, are voted on by our elected legislators. What is the best thing about elected officials? They can be unelected. Whether it is on the local, state or national level, we can replace any and all of these people with those who think like we do. Once people are tired of being told what to do through taxes, we will win.
So, all of you folks out there who are still in the tea party closet, it is time to “out” yourself and join the movement. We’ll even let you call yourselves something else if you like so you won’t have to use the tea party moniker. And I’ve heard there is a supply of fake moustaches to be had.

  1. Nice post Paul! I went yesterday and stood with the Spence Tea Party in Charlton, it was a great experience as their is nothing greater than exercising your right to free speech! I will be going again and again to, where ever I am needed, if my schedule allows, I will be there to help in the cause, and that is to right a wrong that was done to us on 06.28.12.

    1. Monique, I added your name to their Facebook Page, Knox Trail Tea Party, this way you can get info on them. You should send them an email as well to get on their email list, Knoxtrailteaparty@gmail.com, you'll get notified of meetings and going ons. They are much better at those things than we are in the Sturbridge group.
